Welcome to my page of Writings on Music. Between the years of 1998 to 2003, I engaged in a steady crescendo of work as a music journalist, writing reviews, commentary, and interviews for various periodicals and new music journals, including 20th/21st Century Music, American Composers Forum's Sounding Board, and San Francisco Classical Voice. This page represents something of a "best-of" collection. There are two articles which chart the progress of the San Francisco Bay Area ACF's Composer-in-the-Schools pilot program, in which I preserve my impressions as a mentor. Also "Goss's Golden Rules," some cautionary instructions for all those creating "Composer Opportunities." My two favorite interviews are also included, of two New Zealand composers whose works and advice came to have quite an impact on my own creative life (I promise to run the third of the series soon, a conversation with John Psathas). The
close to 40 reviews I wrote for San Francisco Classical voice are preserved here
as well, in which I covered the concert music beat of one of the most active arts
scenes in the Western Hemisphere. It kept me running rather wildly from one assignment
to another, as is revealed by the closely-spaced dates of certain reviews. But
I tried to keep a strong focus on contemporary premieres, for all the supremacy
of music written by men in powdered wigs. I hope it's useful for gaining a sense
of what people were doing in the Bay Area right at the beginning of this new century. Interview
